History

The indoor toilet started as a luxury some time in the 19th century. However, public lavatories as a concept have been around for millennia. Ancient civilizations made many advances in lavatory technology:

The wealthy of ancient Egypt had toilets made of limestone with sand filled containers underneath that were used to empty the excrement. In the Indus Valley after 2,600 BC, streets with networks of sewer systems were built on a grid pattern, and water flushing toilets were used. In the middle ages, toilets were often built over rivers, or connected to a castle moat, where the refuse could drain.

More modern advancements in toilet technology started with Sir John Harrington in 1596, who invented a flushing lavatory system with a cistern. Unfortunately, this new technology didn't catch on until the mid 18th century, and didn't become common until the 19th century. 

Before public restrooms became common place, restroom stall dividers did not exist. Only once they had become popularized in Victorian London did modern concepts of decency necessitate their invention.

The history of the toilet and public restroom isn't done evolving yet. Bathroom segregation issues are now a hot button topic in politics. Toilet technology is also continuing to make advances.
